Development of screening methods to analyse cancerogenous potential of carbon nano tubes

CNT occur as fibers of different lengths and thickness, with an elongated or tangled form and with different surface properties and might possibly cause adverse effects by an uptake into the lung. The primary objective of the project is to clarify, whether single CNT-fibers can cause an asbestos-like biological effect. Furthermore it is also intended to develop preferably safe testing methods in form of quick laboratory tests, which allow a statement about the potential hazard of the different CNT-fibers, without extensive animal experiments. Such reliable tests may lead to an identification of harmless CNT-types already in early stages of product development, what might lead to a significant reduction of a potential health risk within the production of CNT-fibers and the processing of products and components containing CNT. These testing procedures are very important for a reliable toxicity assessment in industrial applications.
