Fullerenes have the potential to overcome internal biological barriers after uptake into the body. The what extent this happens cannot yet be estimated at present.

Surface modified fullerenes were not evaluated.

In rats given a low dose of 0.64 mg/kg of unmodified fullerenes via the diet, mild stress symptoms in the liver and lungs were observed. This is an indirect indication that fullerenes may reach other organs via gastrointestinal absorption [1].

However, direct evidence is not given up to day.
